Field and Karyn
APIA had a table with spring roll demonstrations which attracted groups of viewers.  We distributed flyers about the upcoming Asian Pacific Islander Forum on May 9th.  Students could also pick up the APIA scholarship application.

Halau Hula o Noelani performed auana style hula for the students. Apparently, the traditional kahiko style is not usually performed with recorded music on CDs, only with live musicians.  The auana performance was enhanced by the translations of the movements by a member of the group. All in all it was a success!

WorldFest with Halau Hula O Noelani

May 3rd at 1:00-1:30 pm in the Quad in front of the library.

APIA will sponsor the Hawaiian dance group, Halau Hula O Noelani, for the WorldFest event on May 3rd.  Halau Hula O Noelani is a community based organization for the learning of hula and the Hawaiian culture.

The Fullerton College Foundation provided funding to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month which will include a stipend for the group.

On April 17th, APIA sponsored the Asian theater group, hereandnow, with funding from the Fullerton College Foundation.  hereandnow was started by John Miyasaki with young actors frustrated over the lack of non-stereotypical roles in film, television, and theater. With over 200 actors as cast members over the years, hereandnow has evolved and diversified to include Hispanic actors.  The theater group strives to reflect the experiences and to tell the stories of their cast members through vignettes.  They perform around the country at colleges, universities, conferences, and festivals.

hereandnow cast members performed in front of approximately 60 students, faculty, and staff.  About half the students turned in surveys about the event.  Many found the vignettes thought-provoking as well as entertaining.  A number of students could relate and understand the stories being told.  Some students commented that there aren't enough events reflecting the Asian/Pacific Islander experience.    We'll have to keep trying to organized these events!

"The International Hotel, or I Hotel, was an actual San Francisco landmark, the base for a wild array of pan-Asian artistic, political, and community endeavors. And now this “fortress” and “beacon” provides the impetus and structure for Yamashita's exuberant, irreverent, passionately researched, and many-voiced novel about the Yellow Power movement. Author of the indelible Tropic of Orange (1997), Yamashita nets the social and personal ferment of the years 1968 through 1977 in 10 interconnected, stylistically varied segments. As this jazzy, kaleidoscopic novel unfolds, we meet orphaned teenager Paul and his mentor Chen, a radical professor; Mo Akagi, a Yellow Panther; Gerald, an avant-garde saxophonist; Sandy Hu, an innovative choreographer; and all kinds of gutsy and inventive activists, some in wheelchairs, who comprise a broad spectrum of courageous Asian Americans asserting their rights." From Booklist by Donna Seaman

Dinner: Japanese restaurant Octopus. (375 W. Birch St. Brea) at 5:30.
