Eric Liu's One Man Show

Eric Liu: Citizen Who?

“Should everyone, even the native-born, have to earn citizenship rather than just be given it? Who are we, and what do we owe one another, and who gets to be American and who does not?”

Join APIA in attending writer Eric Liu’s one-man performance. Former Clinton White House speechwriter Eric Liu, author of The Gardens of Democracy and The Accidental Asian, takes us on the journeys of five Americans who took unexpected paths to understand the meaning of being a citizen.  Please visit the following link to reserve a spot: http://www.zocalopublicsquare.org/event/?postId=40392

Allegiance the Musical

On Oct. 20th, members and friends of APIA (the Asian Pacific Islander Faculty Staff Association) drove down to San Diego's Old Globe Theatre to catch the world-premiere run of the musical, Allegiance, starring Tony award winner, Lea Salonga, and George Takei from the original Star Trek series. (Mr. Takei is not singing if you're wondering.)  Allegiance explores the injustices and difficult choices facing Japanese and Japanese Americans who were sent to internment camps during WWII. Much of the musical deals with the conflict and confusion between the Japanese Americans who chose to show their allegiance and patriotism by joining the ranks of the all-Japanese troops and fighting on European battlegrounds and others who chose to protest their incarceration by their "no, no" responses on the controversial loyalty oath resulting in their incarceration at the Tule Lake internment camp which segregated those labeled "disloyal".

Afterwards, there was some discussion about the portrayal and negative emphasis on one of the characters, but all in all, the group enjoyed the performances and quality of the singers.  Several members were able to dine at a nearby izakaya-style restaurant.

APIA had a table with spring roll demonstrations which attracted groups of viewers.  We distributed flyers about the upcoming Asian Pacific Islander Forum on May 9th.  Students could also pick up the APIA scholarship application.

Halau Hula o Noelani performed auana style hula for the students. Apparently, the traditional kahiko style is not usually performed with recorded music on CDs, only with live musicians.  The auana performance was enhanced by the translations of the movements by a member of the group. All in all it was a success!

On April 17th, APIA sponsored the Asian theater group, hereandnow, with funding from the Fullerton College Foundation.  hereandnow was started by John Miyasaki with young actors frustrated over the lack of non-stereotypical roles in film, television, and theater. With over 200 actors as cast members over the years, hereandnow has evolved and diversified to include Hispanic actors.  The theater group strives to reflect the experiences and to tell the stories of their cast members through vignettes.  They perform around the country at colleges, universities, conferences, and festivals.

hereandnow cast members performed in front of approximately 60 students, faculty, and staff.  About half the students turned in surveys about the event.  Many found the vignettes thought-provoking as well as entertaining.  A number of students could relate and understand the stories being told.  Some students commented that there aren't enough events reflecting the Asian/Pacific Islander experience.    We'll have to keep trying to organized these events!
