Asian American & Pacific Islander Forum
On Oct. 25, 2017, The Cadena Cultural Center, Ethnic Studies Department, and the NOCCCD Asian Pacific Islander Faculty & Staff Association held the annual forum. Larry Hashima discussed, "Dismantling the Model Minority Myth: Addressing the 'Invisible' Asian American & Pacific Islander Student Experience". Topics included the AAPI LGBTIQ experience, DACA students, and the mental health stigma in AAPI communities. The forum was well-attended and gave the students an opportunity for discussion and input.

2017 APIA Scholarship Recipient
APIA 2017 Scholarship Award
Joseph Dabu was the recipient of the 2017 APIA award for
academic excellence and community/campus service. Joseph's high GPA earned him a place on the President's Honor List. After Joseph worked as a
staff writer and news editor for the FC Hornet newspaper, his efforts paid
off and he will be transferring to USC in fall 2017 as a journalism major. In
addition, Joseph helped promote the
Growth Mindset initiative on campus by serving as a student ambassador. Students who believe their skills and talents can be strengthened through
hard work, strategic actions, and networking have a growth mindset. Joseph was
also the secretary of the Alpha Gamma Sigma honors society where he served not
only as a board member, but as an active volunteer in Saturday arts and
crafts classes for young students at Commonwealth Elementary School. He also
participated in many campus events including WorldFest, Kindercaminata, Love
Fullerton and the Crittenton Refugee Program.

The Asian and Pacific Islander Forum will be held this coming Monday, May 1, 2017 from 12:00-1:30 pm in rooms 224-228 of the College Center.
In honor of Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month (May), the NOCCCD Asian & Pacific Islander Faculty & Staff Association, FC Ethnic Studies Department and the Cadena Cultural Center invite the district community to the 6th Annual Fullerton College Asian & Pacific Islander Forum.
2017 Keynote Speaker Aida Cuenza-Uvas, Director, ARISE Program Mt. San Antonio College
Keynote Theme: Talk Story: Sharing the life experiences of Asian American & Pacific Islanders (AAPI) students.
***Small group discussions will follow Ms. Cuenza-Uvas’ address and will cover what Fullerton College can do to better serve AAPI students. Let your voice be heard!***Refreshments will be served.

The 2016-2017 APIA Scholarship is due Friday, May 5th, 2017. The scholarship is open to currently enrolled students at NOCCCD campuses. Asian Pacific Islander Faculty
Staff Association (APIA) seeks to recognize outstanding students who exemplify
the spirit of APIA by achieving academic excellence and demonstrating personal
commitment and dedicated service to their community. The application form is at Application form.

- Be a currently enrolled student at a North Orange County Community College District campus
- Plan to be enrolled at least half-time at an accredited college or university in the Fall 2017 term OR continuing at a NOCCCD college in Fall 2017
- Demonstrate community involvement or volunteer work
- Have a minimum grade point average of 3.00
The APIA Spring 2017 scholarship
of $200 will be awarded to one currently enrolled student in any field. The student must submit (1) a personal essay
(maximum 500 words) of goals and accomplishments including his or her community
involvement; (2) a transcript of grades (a printout of the unofficial
transcript from MyGateway is acceptable); (3) a letter of recommendation; (4)
and the application form. Applications can be picked up at the Fullerton College Library or the Cadena Cultural Center.
